ABOUT CCIJ 

​

The California Collaborative for Immigrant Justice (CCIJ) utilizes coordination, advocacy, and legal services to fight for the liberation of immigrants in detention in California. We seek to empower immigrants in detention and their communities through technical assistance, education, and participatory defense strategies, while also advancing advocacy, policy and litigation initiatives consistent with the goals of abolition and freedom for immigrants in detention. We are a statewide organization headquartered in Oakland, CA and our 12 staff members are located throughout the state.

THE POSITION

 

CCIJ is hiring a Senior Staff Attorney to support our legal team and be responsible for legal services and advocacy strategy and representation. This position will work closely with CCIJ’s two senior staff attorneys and provide mentorship and supervision to legal fellows as they learn the practice of removal defense and immigration law.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Provide full legal representation in removal defense and/or custody cases such as habeas petitions or bond hearings;

  • Conduct and/or coordinate follow up on detained cases referred through CCIJ legal clinics, including but not limited to consultations with detainees and/or their families, providing legal materials, referring cases for pro bono representation, and flagging issues related to abuse, compliance, and/or advocacy needs;  

  • Arrange and facilitate regular detention roundtable meetings; 

  • Act as mentor attorney for any CCIJ capacity building project (i.e. rural fellowship) including attending immigration court and acting as co-counsel on removal defense cases; and

  • Participate in and lead detention visits as needed.

  • As capacity/skills permit, participate in litigation and advocacy.

REQUIREMENTS

​

  • Member of a State Bar (California membership preferred); 

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience representing detained immigrants in removal proceedings and/or federal court litigation;

  • Knowledge and experience filing habeas petitions preferred;

  • Must be fully fluent in Spanish (i.e. able to speak to clients in Spanish without an interpreter and able translate written materials in English to Spanish); 

  • Experience (personal and/or professional) with populations CCIJ serves, including people in detention, immigrant communities, and individuals who have been impacted by the criminal legal system; and

  • Willingness to travel to California immigrant detention centers in Kern and Imperial counties, and willingness to travel to CCIJ headquarters in Oakland if located outside of the Bay Area.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

​

CCIJ’S office is located in Oakland, CA. Remote work is possible, but candidates must reside in California. 

​

COMPENSATION

​

The salary range is $90,000-$100,000. Benefits include medical, dental, Flex Spending/Dependent Care Accounts, 403(b) retirement plan, wellness stipend, and vacation leave(accrued at 3 weeks per year, plus PTO)), plus holiday closures(10+ days), which includes additional office closure around the December holidays.
