JOB POSTING: COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER

ABOUT CCIJ 

The California Collaborative for Immigrant Justice (CCIJ) utilizes coordination, advocacy, and legal services to fight for the liberation of immigrants in detention in California. We seek to empower immigrants in detention and their communities through technical assistance, education, and participatory defense strategies, while also advancing advocacy, policy and litigation initiatives consistent with the goals of abolition and freedom for immigrants in detention. We are a statewide organization headquartered in Oakland, CA and our 11 staff members are located throughout the state. 

THE POSITION

 

CCIJ is hiring a Communications Manager to effectively communicate CCIJ’s work to our community and stakeholders. You’ll help plan and implement our overall messaging strategy by designing, writing, and publishing or sending out blog posts, newsletters, campaign emails, social media posts, press releases, and other promotional materials. You’ll coordinate with other staff members to facilitate ongoing communications to various stakeholders, as well as support our fundraising campaigns with your great writing skills. You’ll build and maintain relationships with the press, other media outlets, and partner organizations to spread the word about CCIJ. You’ll also use communication tools to uplift the demands of those inside detention and prepare detained organizers for calls with the media.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS 

  • Carry out the organization's overall strategic communications plan in partnership with key staff; 

  • Develop and track relevant communications metrics to determine the effectiveness of our strategic communications plan;

  • Create and promote written (blog posts, articles, press release, etc.) and visual content  (videos, photos, graphics etc.) that speaks to the organization’s mission and values;

  • Manage CCIJ’s social media work across all platforms, and leverage social media outlets for furthering CCIJ’s mission; compose and schedule regular updates on behalf of CCIJ, engage with social media audiences,; monitor and review new and changing social media platforms and make recommendations on their use;

  • Manage media relations in collaboration with the Community Engagement Director, including responding to incoming media calls, publishing press releases, and cultivating relationships with media representatives;

  • Serve as editor and content manager of the CCIJ’s website, ensuring that content is updated regularly according to the communications plan calendar and that all information remains accurate and up to date;

  • Create and upload campaigns for liberation on our Take Action platform 

  • Maintain organizational brand and identity consistency across multiple platforms;

  • Assist with the design, development, and implementation of CCIJ social media and video training events such as FB Live, Zoom trainings, and other video content as needed; and 

  • Assist with the design and implementation of online fundraising campaigns.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum 3-5 years of relevant work experience in communications, journalism, or public relations;

  • Proficiency in social media (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Instagram) and willingness to learn new applications;

  • Proficient with a graphic design platform (i.e., Canva, Adobe Suite);

  • Ability to write messaging for social media and newsletters that is consistent with CCIJ’s mission of abolishing immigration detention;

  • Experience developing and implementing communication strategies;

  • Excellent writer and communicator;

  • Experience in developing high quality multimedia collateral, including blogs, graphic design, videos, websites and podcasts;

  • Skilled at time management with the ability to juggle both short and long term deadline and the ability to respond to organizational needs as they arise

  • Adept at learning digital tools and campaign/project management systems such as Google Suite, Mailchimp, etc.; and

  • Familiarity with Wix maintenance or design

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in fundraising and development, ideally with community-based organizations;

  • Experience (personal and/or professional) with populations CCIJ serves, including people in detention, immigrant communities, and individuals who have been impacted by  the criminal legal system; and

  • Fluency in Spanish is strongly encouraged.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

CCIJ’S office is located in Oakland, CA. Remote work is possible but candidates must live within the State of California and be willing to travel to immigrant detention centers in California as well as our Oakland office throughout the year.  

COMPENSATION

The salary range is $65-75K, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Benefits include medical, dental, Flex Spending/Dependent Care Accounts, 403(b) retirement plan, wellness stipend, and four (4) weeks of paid time off per year, plus holiday closures, which includes additional office closure around the December holidays.
