2022 was a year of tremendous growth and exciting wins for CCIJ! Here are some of our greatest accomplishments:
LEGAL EFFORTS:
Began in-person legal clinics at Golden State Annex and provided 478 legal consults to 223 detained immigrants.
Won release for a client detained at Imperial Regional Detention Facility
Helped detained leaders at Mesa Verde, Golden State Annex & Imperial file OCRCL Complaints
Filed $1 A Day Lawsuit against GEO Group
Co-authored KYR Labor Rights Handbook
ORGANIZING/COORDINATION:
Participated in NO Studios’ 2022 Social Justice Summit with our panel ‘Limitations of the Law, Centering Immigrant Voices in the Fight to End Immigrant Detention’.
Co-launched the campaign to #ReinstateVisitation inside detention centers across the US.
Co-launched our second book drive- Pages Not Cages, and collected books for people detained at Mesa Verde, Golden State and Yuba County Jail.
Participated in the Strike Support Committee in support of the labor strike at Mesa Verde and Golden State Annex.
Participated in the #BringCarlosHome Campaign.
CELEBRATED THE YUBA-ICE CONTRACT TERMINATION!
ADVOCACY:
Published our report Starving for Justice, The Denial of Proper Nutrition in Immigrant Detention.
The CA Mandela Act made it to the Governor's desk and although it received a veto, Gov. Newsom stated solitary confinement is ripe for reform - We'll be back next year!
PUBLIC HEALTH:
Participated in the National Vaccine Panel on Immigration Detention.
Coordinated 707 calls between individuals in detention with trusted medical professionals to answer questions about covid vaccines and boosters.
Secured access to mRNA vaccines and bivalent boosters in Yuba County Jail, Golden State Annex, Mesa Verde, & Imperial by advocating with the public health departments of CA and the counties which host detention centers.
ORGANIZATIONAL WINS:
Launched our rebrand with a new website and logo
Our team grew! We welcomed Armida, Mariel, Elaina and Andrea to our staff.
Held our first in-person staff/board retreat.
